Challenge

In the last decade, there has been a huge growth in the pet market in general, but it has been in the past five years that supply and demand have been tending towards super-specialisation. After carrying out an in-depth analysis of the media landscape, we detected a major lack of informative content, very general data and no industry spokesperson. Our goal was to position Tiendanimal as a leading source of information in the pet industry and to draw on the brand reputation (more than one million customers a year use its online store) in order to provide a snapshot on the pet industry in Spain and the relation that owners have with their animals.

Actions

We carried out the Annual Pet Study by Tiendanimal (the first in 2017), a benchmark study for opinion leaders and industry players in Spain about owners and their pets. The data collected in the three main areas of the study, Owners (users), Veterinary (professionals) and CSR (network of animal rescue homes), helped us create a variety of "information pills" that we classified into the areas of use, treatment, education, health, alternative diets, legislation and living with pets. These areas can be used in communications throughout the year.

Results

  • Possibility of launching the Annual Pet Study by Tiendanimal in Spain on an annual basis. In 2018, an increase of the sample was achieved (44.72% in the case of users, 16% in the case of professionals and 159% in the case of animal rescue centres) and new areas and approaches were incorporated into the questions.
  • Collection of data on the pet industry that had never been published and which Tiendanimal can offer exclusively to the media.
  • A high number of media impacts that continued to grow throughout the year, as they are a turn-to media reference with data included in articles on a range of topics.
